No matter what the circumstances, grief is a painful, confusing process. GriefShare is a safe place where people understand the difficult emotions of grief. At this weekly support group, you’ll discover what to expect in the days ahead and what’s “normal” in grief. Since there are no neat, orderly stages of grief, you’ll learn helpful ways of coping with grief and gain solid support each step of the way. At each meeting, you will view a video on grief-related topics, have a small-group discussion to allow people time to talk & share support. Everyone will receive a workbook to take home filled with valuable exercises for navigating their personal grieving process. Meetings will begin Tuesday evenings,3/18/25 at the school location in the Parish Hall (a few classes will be in the library) from 6-8pm. If any questions or to pre-register, please go to GriefShare.org or contact Joleen Hoff, #217-899-9418 or trinitygriefshare@yahoo.com.

Trinity Lutheran Church Guidelines for Hospital Visits
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all
comfort, who comforts us in all our trouble, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort
we ourselves received from God.” – 2 Corinthians 1.3-4
Thank you so much for volunteering your time to visit those members of Trinity who are hospitalized! As
a community of faith, we are called to encourage and support one another and visiting people in the
hospital is critical to not only building relationships and community, but in ministering to those who are
sick and their families. I’m so excited that the Lord has placed it on your heart to be part of this aspect of
the ministry. Your presence and support are invaluable during one’s time of need and is a tangible
expression of faith as we strive to live out Christ’s teachings.
Visiting the sick is a direct call from Jesus to care for those in need. It is an act of love and compassion
that shows not only your love and care for someone, but God’s love as well. In Matthew 25, Jesus tells us
that when we visit the sick, we are in fact visiting Him – for just “as you did to one of the least of these
my brothers, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25.40) and the Epistle of James has a powerful message of hope
and healing through prayer and faith, which also serves as a call to action for us: “Is anyone among you
sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of
the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up.”
(James 5.14-15) Prayers, Scripture, and your presence will not only encourage those who are sick and
their families, but you can help direct them to trusting in the care of our Lord, Jesus Christ, even and
especially through their sickness.
First, I’m thinking that we have a sort of “On Call” schedule, so that if someone has been hospitalized,
you don’t all receive every alert. If it is not an emergency, I will have Jill send out an e-mail informing
you of the need and you can make your visit on your schedule, or if you are unable to, please respond so.
When someone has been hospitalized, you will receive the member’s name and what hospital they are at,
as well as their room number if we know it, otherwise you will be able to get that from the hospital staff. I
believe for both Memorial and St. John’s, visiting hours are from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
When you make your visit, introduce yourself if you don’t know the member and let them know that
you’re from Trinity. You may want to wear your Trinity Name Tag as well. Spend a few minutes visiting
with them, listening carefully. If you want to share some of your own experiences that may provide
encouragement, please feel free to do so, but simply showing sympathy will go a long way. If the family is
there, please feel free to speak to them as well, asking them questions and showing that we are caring for
them as well – sometimes these visits mean as much or more to the family than the hospitalized.
After a few minutes, ask them if they would like you to pray or read some Scripture to them, if they don’t
want a long visit, at least say a brief prayer and the Lord’s Prayer. When you leave, reassure them of
God’s care and providence in all things, and that His healing hand is at work according to His good and
gracious will, and pray that the Holy Spirit would bring them comfort and peace. Your visit may only be
10 minutes long or it may be half an hour or more – but through your visit, God will be at work in their
hearts to bring them hope and show them that their Trinity Family is praying for them and ministering
to them.
I pray that God will bless you as well through these visits as you minister to the people of Trinity in such
an important time. As this is a new endeavor for Trinity, I’m sure that there will be some trial and error,
so please feel free to give feedback to help improve our process and resources to help you with your visits.
Your Servant in Christ,
Trinity Lutheran Church Guidelines for Hospital Visits
Pastor Jonathan Sharp
